Why Internet Marketing is an old man’s game

Internet Marketing is an Old man’s game

An introduction to Internet Marketing.

The internet has been growing rapidly for the last several years to something that now attracts over 1,463,632,361 people every single day. With the growth of the internet, people have started to see the development of a new market where products and services can be bought and sold through the click of a button. Electronic products have become a new hype and with the ease of distribution people and companies jumped straight on to the idea. However with the potential of the new market, strategies needed to be created in order to promote and advertise these products, hello and welcome Internet marketing.

Internet marketing is defined as

A generic term used to describe techniques that leverage the Internet for driving traffic and customers to one’s business.

and with the creation of internet marketing several sub categories of internet marketing were created. So why do I say that Internet marketing is an old man’s game, well let’s find out.

Why is Internet Marketing an Old man’s game?

To be seen as an expert in a certain field it generally takes time to learn the ropes and experience making the good and bad choices so you can learn along the way. This is the same with Internet Marketing you need to have the knowledge and experience to be seen as an expert and with experience comes time.

You need to have spent the time learning about your field, experiencing it first hand as this is the best way to learn. Your not going to learn everything there is to know about Internet marketing in a couple of months, you probably won’t be able to learn everything about Internet marketing in several years because internet marketing is a constantly advancing science of the internet which attracts new ideas every single day. The appearance and growth of social media marketing supports that internet marketing is always going to change to meet the capabilities of future technology and the fads that come along with it.

6 Reasons Internet Marketing is an Old man’s game

  1. They have an already established network. Networking is something you hear about a lot in internet marketing, with the development of social networking and social bookmarking sites. It has appeared that socialising with others is a great way of building up your brand, selling your product or building the network/community needed to make your blog rise above the rest.  The older generation were first to take advantage of this through emailing other people who have similar interests and communicating on discussion boards.
  2. They have the relationships with other experienced internet marketers. Linking in with the first reason, the older generation were the first generation to use discussion boards and other methods of electronic communication so they were able to speak and get noticed much easier than today’s generation of aspiring internet marketers.
  3. Old people like to know other old people especially when they have the same interests. Again this links in quite well with my second reason, old people have a fear of being alone therefore they are quick to get talking especially when others have similar interests.
  4. They have the portfolio and examples of the work needed to impress. As the older generation were the first to jump on the internet marketing band wagon they were able to test new methods of marketing and exploit these methods if they were successful. It was easier to make sites in popular areas of the internet which had little to no competition and they didn’t have to be making the sites extra special or extra unique like you do today. With the good and bad mistakes they made came the examples of work which would impress others this can help to make a name for themselves or to leverage traffic and customers.
  5. They have spent the years needed to get the rankings. It’s a common fact that everyone knows search engine rankings take time especially in competitive areas well old men were again able to take advantage of this with their expertise and the time available it was made much easier than it is now.
  6. They have the fan club to build their popularity. With the experience, skills, search engine rankings, professional portfolios and everything else that old men were able to acquire it is just a question of how long before the fans start coming.
  7. They have the experience and personal skills needed built over time. Lastly the older generation were able to gain the personal skills needed to establish relationships and partnerships.

The idea of this article isn’t to have a moan about old men nor is it to go on about timing and how it isn’t fair for the current generation having to slave away endlessly on a blog that has so much competition that in the time of writing this article another one million other blogs were developed instead the point was to show how timing is important and with timing what other necessities are required to make it in such a competitive market.

I hope you enjoyed this article and found it a little amusing I had fun writing it however I did find it hard trying to make the article a little more laid back than usual. Please Sphinn and Stumble the article, thanks.

Check that user number figure. Remember that there is only 6.72 billion people living in the world today. And that number is saying that over 6.67 billion use the internet daily.

Definitely needs to be a tad lower. :)

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I am such a fool sometimes it was in a table and I took the world population as the figure instead of the internet user statistics which was next to it.

Thanks again, I ve changed it now. To be honest I thought it was a little high.
