Top 25 Success Secrets – Establishing A Routine
Posted by Steven Wagenheim on October 10, 2010 in GeneralIn the last installment of Top 25 Success Secrets, I went over understanding buyer psychology, which is critical to creating compelling sales copy. If you don’t understand why people buy things, you can’t push the right buttons to get them to buy YOUR product. If you didn’t read that article, I suggest you do so after you’re done reading this one.
Well, I can’t believe we’ve finally made it to the top 10. In this installment, we hit number 10…establishing a routine. Until you’ve done this, you can’t possibly imagine how important it is to have one. This article explains why.
A lot of people get to this success secret and scratch their heads. “What’s so important about establishing a routine? Can’t I just do my work whenever I get the time? Won’t it eventually get done?”
The answer to that, in almost all cases, is a resounding no. Why? Well, that’s what I’m going to explain now by way of a very simple hypothetical example.
Let’s take John Doe as our example. John works a 9 to 5 job in order to support his family. He gets up every morning at 6 AM, showers, has breakfast and is out of the house at 8 AM to be at the office by 9.
At 5 PM sharp, he leave. It’s an hour ride home. John arrives, gets into something comfortable, has dinner and is done eating by about 7 PM.
At this point in time, John just wants to relax a little. It’s been a long day. So he sits down and reads the paper for a half hour. He then sees that it’s about 7:30 and realizes he needs to get some work done for his home business. So he heads over to the computer.
First thing John does when he gets to the computer is he checks his email. That takes him about 15 minutes at least because he gets so much of it.
After that, he really wants to get to his home business but he doesn’t have a routine so he doesn’t know where to start. So instead, he heads on over to YouTube and watches a few videos. He sees some he really likes so he goes and shares them with his friends on Facebook and even tweets about them at Twitter.
John then realizes that he has some stuff at Ebay that he’s bidding on and he wants to see how those auctions are going. This reminds him that there were a few things that he wanted to pick up over at Amazon.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
By the time John Doe is done with all this nonsense, it’s 10 PM and John realizes that he has to get to bed to be able to get up a 6 AM to start his day all over again.
If John had a routine, a schedule, he’d be able to sit down at the computer after reading his paper and get right to work. He wouldn’t have to think about what he has to do. He’d just do it. And then, once he DID get into the routine, he’d find it almost impossible to get out of it. He’d be locked in.
I can’t stress the importance of establishing a routine enough because NO…you won’t get the work done without it.
