Top 25 Success Secrets – Branding Yourself
Posted by Steven Wagenheim on October 10, 2010 in General, Marketing ArticlesIn the last installment of my series on Top 25 Success Secrets, I talked about observing trends, something that’s very important to do if you want to stay on top of what’s new in the world and maybe get an edge over the next guy. In this installment, I’m going to talk about branding yourself…something that has been quite helpful to me.
Let me start out by saying this. Branding yourself doesn’t have to necessarily mean that you brand YOUR name like I did, Steven Wagenheim. There are plenty of people out there who go through this Internet marketing, home business maze without anybody knowing who they really were. I’ll actually give you an example as I go along. You can remain anonymous and still brand yourself at the same time.
For example, take The Rich Jerk. Love him or hate him, he had one heck of shtick going. If you haven’t heard of him, he made his pseudo name famous by coming out with really outrageous in your face copy and sending emails to prospects that essentially called them losers. He angered a lot of people and also made a lot of money.
He has since come out and revealed his real name but back in the old days, he WAS the Rich Jerk and there was nobody else like him. He took branding to a whole new level.
I, on the other hand, went with branding myself as me. I mean who in their right mind would pick a pseudo name like Wagenheim? I could have done a lot better than that. But I wasn’t concerned with coming up with a fancy moniker. I just wanted to be a real person and establish myself as an authority on marketing online. It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen.
Okay, so why is branding important? The answer is simple. If prospects can remember something about you, whether it’s your name, product or service, they’re going to think of you first before they go to a no name competitor who they might have never heard of at all.
Think about it. When you think of cola, who do you think of? Coke and Pepsi, right? When you think of tires, who do you think of? Firestone and Goodyear, right? Maybe Michelin.
Point is, people like to have a name to latch onto. Nobody wants to say, “Who is that guy who has that book on article marketing?” If they can’t remember the book’s name, the person’s name will bring the book’s name up. If they can’t remember the guy’s name but DO remember the book’s name, same thing…eventually the guy’s name will come up.
What’s in a name? EVERYTHING is in a name. Without names we’d all be, well, nameless. We’d all be walking around going, “Hey YOU!”
As I said, you don’t have to brand your real name or even a pseudo name. It can be the name of your company.
Think anybody has any problems remember who Aweber is when it comes to list building? Now THAT is branding for you.
Go through some of the biggest companies around and take a look at their brand and how they brand themselves.
There are million dollar lessons out there.
To YOUR Success,
