The Anatomy of a Good Sitemap

The Anatomy of a Good Sitemap

A sitemap should be used in every website to help visitors find the pages they are looking for within the website. The structure of a sitemap starts with all the main web pages and continues to hyper link every page that the website has created.

A sitemap has both practical and technical uses, the practical uses are that it helps visitors to find certain pages within a website. This can be extremely difficult when you are surfing a website with hundreds or thousands of pages. It helps ensure that visitors do not get lost and adds an ease of navigation to the website. It has been proven that websites with larger ease of navigation are more likely to have more repeat visitors than a website with bad navigation, a sitemap helps to increase this.

Many webmasters and designers do not take full advantage of sitemaps and instead merely create a list of links to each of the pages within a website. For these people, as long as spiders and bots can crawl this page and find every other page linked to the sitemap then they are happy. However I believe it would be better if you could create a sitemap which not only lists all the other pages of a website but is also structured accordingly and laid out in a clean and simple manner.

A well built, well designed sitemap would include descriptions and tags/keywords with each link on the sitemap. This would help users find the most appropriate webpage within that website.

Description

A categorizeded webpage assembling a list of hundreds of SEO related articles which not only talk about SEO but guide you step by step in to the world of search engine optimization. If you’re looking for SEO tips, techniques and tutorials you have come to the right place.

A sitemap like this would be far more useful than one which just lists pages link by link with no alteration or difference between each hyper link. Web visitors are much more likely to appreciate and benefit from the sitemap above than a normal list ridden page of links.

Creating a sitemap like the above not only has benefits for the visitors but also for your website and helps to improve your search engine rankings. By adding the description beneath each link you are able to add more content to a website, more keywords and make your website stand out amongst the crowd. A sitemap which is designed in the way above will have a unique element in comparison to 99% of your competition therefore the search engines will take important notice of this as your website would have a hidden, unique element.

It really pays to design and create a good sitemap not only for your visitors but also for your search engine rankings.
