AdWords

Affiliate

Affiliate sites market products and services that are generally sold by another website which would earn a percentage of commission on each product or service they sold. Learn more about this here. How to use an Affiliate Program

Algorithm

This is generally used with Google‘s Pageank formula, a mathematical equation they use to pagerank websites from 1-10 in page rank. An algorithm is also used in search engines to rank websites from pagerank 1 upwards. Learn how to pagerank your website here Why are Back Links so important?

Analytics

This is a program used by search engines to establish which websites will come up for which key words or terms. This can be seen for your own website at Google analytics and Google webmaster tools.

Anchor text

This is usually a short piece of text that goes with a link to a website usually including the relevancy of the website and small collection of keywords that the website offers.

Business to Business

Backlinks

Blackhat

Bouncerate

This can be seen in Google analytics and other traffic stat software, it is the percentage of users that enter the website and leave with out moving on to another page.

Click Fraud

This is the use of improper clicks on one person’s advertisements. The reason people may do this is to increase the click rate therefore increase the amount they make, or to sabotage another persons website advertisements and hope to get them banned from using that advertising company.

Content

This is everything you see on this website, the text and headlines that make up this website, the part of this website which is informative and interesting. Content plays an important role whilst trying to increase your websites exposure to search engines for individual keywords. CPC

Cost Per Click the rate at which a user is paid for a pay per click advertiser.

CPM

Cost Per Thousand Impressions A formula measured to calculate the value of a click per the amount of impressions that the website has made.

Directory

A website which its primary function is to store information on other people’s websites allowing people to surf through and search for appropriate websites.

Directory Page

A list of websites in which they are ordered.

Duplicate Content

Content which matches another person’s content displayed on the web. Usually just copy and pasted content however some text can be altered and still be seen as duplicated.

Google Dance

A change in SERPs because of an update by Google.

Googlebot

Google’s spider program used to crawl websites.

Hit

A hit is a page view or an impression to one person’s website.

Impression

When a user views a web page once.

Inbound Link

These are links that are sent from another person’s website to your own.

Indexed Pages

Pages of a website that have been filed with in a search engine.

Keyword

A keyword is a relevant word to a website, usually a word that is commonly entered in to search engines.

Keyword Density

The percentage of text on a certain page divided by the amount of words which can be seen as being keywords. Try to keep this between 5-7% as google may penalize a website for using too many of the same word.

Keyword research

The time that is used searching for relevant commonly used words to your website.

Links

Longtail

These are Key Terms that are commonly used however do not have much competition with in a search engine and usually specify a certain market.

Monetize

PageRank

A numerical value between 0-10 given to a website by Google which uses an algorithm to calculate the websites overall value. The algorithm focuses mainly on the number of backlinks the website has. You can think of pagerank as being a websites star rating as you can compare with hotels which may get a rating of 1-5 for how good it is. Websites can get a rating of 0-10 to show how good the website is.

PPC

SEM

This is a web page within a website that is developed to show the overall size of a website and to show which web pages link with which. It is used to increase website visibility and make it easier for search engines to index pages within a website. URL

Uniform Resource Locator basically a websites address like this one seen in the address bar.

Whitehat
