Have you picked the right Market?

Have you picked the right Market?

The 9th part of 11 things to consider before you start Blogging takes a look at your Blogging market, indicators that will help you to understand whether the Blogging market you have chosen is right for you, this depends on several things but the most important one being why you are Blogging.

A lot of Bloggers when talking about starting to Blog say that you should Blog about something your interested in or a topic that you have a lot of knowledge in, now although this is some great advice and a good place to start there is more to picking a Blogging market than just this.

Why are you going to Blog?

Lets start with this, one of the most important factors that you should consider when you choose your Blogging market is why you plan on Blogging. If you get this clear from the start then choosing a Blogging market will become much easier.

There are a couple of different reasons people start to Blog the main one being to make money online another will be as a hobby and another familiar reason is to network and communicate with others. When taking this in to consideration you can’t just settle for a market which your interested in because its not always possible to make a good income from every market available.

Take transport for example a really bad example I know but I am really rubbish at thinking of “on the spot” examples.

If you were to set up a Blog on transport because perhaps your a Bus driver or Chief executive of the transport in your local area or perhaps your just interested in transport, and you wanted to make money from your Blog there wouldn’t be much you could do to monetize your blog other than using an advertising program such as Google Adsense. I realise this was a weak example but I hope it got the message across, you need to figure out what your primary goal with your Blog is and then figure out the Blogging market around this goal.

What to look for in a Blogging market?

Now you should of highlighted what your primary goal is, its now time to highlight which Blogging market your going to enter.

If your planning on making money through your Blog then you need to figure out whether the market your interested in is profitable if not then you need to do your research.  The best way of finding out whether your market is popular, proftable and worth investing your time in is to look at your competition.

You can find your competition through searching for relevant blogs using your main market keyword and adding blog to the end. Don’t cut short the amount of time you spend researching for your perfect Blogging market because this will be one of the most important decisions you make in your Blogging career.

Here is your Blogging Market checklist

  1. Check that your competition has Adverts
  2. Surf through your competitions Archives and figure out how long they have been Blogging
  3. Figure out if your competition focuses on one market or spreads theres out
  4. Find out figures and statistics such as RSS subscriber numbers, Twitter Numbers, Alex, Compete, Google PR, Inbound Links
  5. Surf the Blog and check whether they make public their monthly income
  6. Read some of their articles, are they interesting, quality, small/big
  7. Do they have any Unique Selling Points on their Blog
  8. How many comments do they receive
  9. What else is their related to your market? Forums, Yahoo/Google Groups…
  10. Do some general Keyword Research, check for daily searches, is it a popular market
  11. Check Google Adwords price for Keywords
  12. Type relevant keywords in to Google, check for Adwords competition

Tip: A good indicator to check whether a certain market or keyword is profitable is to do a quick Google search for using the main keyword and to then check whether there are many Google Adwords PPC campaigns running.

After you have done your research and found your primary Blogging market you can move on to doing some more in detail Keyword Research amongst many other things. You can read the other chapters of this series here at 11 things to consider before you start Blogging main page.
